Chapter Fourteen
âGet in,â I snap at Keegan and Marcus, raising my eyebrow when I notice Marcus isnât using his cane. The SUV has already been gone over multiple times to make sure thereâs not something like, oh you knowâ¦a fucking bomb. Still, Keeganâs nose is scrunched in disgust and Marcus looks ready to laugh. âKeegan, I swear to all that is holy right now, if you donât get your damn ass in this vehicleâ¦â
Huffing, Keegan slides into the front seat, putting Marcus behind him. âI want to point out my Camaro is a much better option.â
Side eyeing him as I drive out of the mansionâs driveway, I snort. âSure. Too bad about those bloodstains.â
âWhat? Donât you have cleaners?â Keeganâs horrified voice almost causes me to choke, because damn, itâs too easy to rile him up.
âAbout these soldiers. You have a plan for this? Or do I just get to go in and kill everyone possible?â I ignore his question, knowing itâll drive him crazy.
âLio, play nice. You know the garage would never let bloodstains stay in any vehicleâeven Keeganâs.â
Sighing, I roll my eyes. âWhatever. Take away my fun. Still, you didnât answer my question. Whatâs the game plan? Kill everyone? Are we leading them to their death? I probably should have picked some more toys if itâs mass murderââ
Marcus laughs hard enough that he starts to cough as he tries to regulate his breathing. When he finally calms down, he answers me. âNo, not mass murder, per se. The ones who arenât trainable, who would never meet Il Padroneâs standardsâ¦yeah, they wonât be leaving. Or if they do, they certainly canât be in the Family. Those who can be trained, should be given an option. And the very few I trust, I believe should be presented with an opportunity.â
Groaning, I focus on the road instead of the pain that sounds like. âWhat numbers are we talking about here?â
âSince most of them are from Brendanâs entourage? Weâve already had major hits on ourâtheâmen. We never really were able to seek out more soldiers on our own. Iâd say youâre looking at maybe 20 or so who arenât worth shit. Whether they live or notâ¦Itâs up to you. 10 maybe who could be trained if they have someone dedicated to it. I wasnât able to offer that fully. And then probably 8, two of those specifically, who are very well trained. Now, do I know if they will all take the opportunities? Not a fucking clue. Especially as there are some Italians in there.â
âOh fuck,â I mutter. This is not going to go well. âThere is no way any of the former Martelli soldiers can join again. Thatâs not happening.â
Neither Keegan nor Marcus say anything, and I grip the steering wheel tighter, letting off the gas a bit in order to have time to run through more scenarios. Huffing, Keegan joins in the conversation. âLook. Weâve got them coming in waves. First wave are the ones Marcus highly suggests keeping. Second wave are purely possibilities.
